Luna market square

Also known as the market square, the trade-district square

The market square of Luna's trade district. An island of stalls fills its centre, and a monument stands on an old plinth.

The monument

  • Human Luna first raised a monument to King Artorin, the Oathdrawer here. His statue was pulled down and the plinth kept. It fell at the Fall, c. 705 BL.
  • The plinth is human-built, older and more worn than the square. Its Old Speak inscription has been chiselled off, a mark of the Sufferance's broken promise.
  • On it now stands a Luminarite monument to the Light, from the lighting of the Spire at 0 AL. Its form is a luminarite beacon pillar or a Creed figure holding a light.

The trade district by day

In The Outcast Knight, the trade district marks an abrupt boundary at the edge of the slums. Within half a dozen steps, filth gives way to swept flagstones, and the smell of smoke and rot gives way to bread, roasting meat and spices. Luminarite lamps light its orderly stalls and shuttered shops, and only the wealthy and the native elves walk there at leisure. At dawn the wooden stalls spread out in bright disorder under cloth awnings that snap in the breeze. They are heaped with tomatoes, polished apples and berries, and the air is thick with cinnamon, warm bread and crushed mint. Among the traders are a fabric vendor with shimmering silks, an alchemist and a posted board offering odd jobs.

For anyone born in the slums, human or dwarf, the district is as close as they ever come to the residential spires, even with coin in their pocket. One street further uphill, the guards remember the old decrees. A checkpoint guards that border, and Fi was thrown into the hole for letting a dwarf slip past it.

At the edge of the poorer stalls stands the tent of the illusionist Fate Mistwreath. It is made of black silk, carries no sign, and is lit by a single blue lantern that burns without a flame.

The execution of Tragus Halmund

The book calls the square itself "the trade square". After a horn sounds three times, the starving come up from the slums and silk-clad elves come down from the citadel, and the two crowds meet there "like oil and water". From a raised podium, King Aurelion Solastis condemns Tragus Halmund, father of his new bride Haelara, for the murder of a royal guard. A platform powered by luminarite crystal lowers Tragus with a rope around his neck, the trapdoor drops, and his body is left hanging. The King then announces that Haelara is with child and that this heir will stand above his elder sons. A few in the square cheer, but most stand in stunned silence. Fi, Usso and Ferrin watch it all from the edge of the square.

Panic and festival

As a child, Eamon slipped through the trade district stealing apples from the stalls. Guards chased him off, merchants shouted, and a few kind ones pressed bread into his hand. When he returns at the head of his thralls, merchants snatch up their children and flee, leaving stalls half-covered, coins scattered across the tables and crates overturned. Strings of dried fish sway at the abandoned stalls. During the Festival of Light, food stalls fill the streets with spiced bread, roast meat and sugared fruit, and minstrels play in every square.
