Runa refuses to let injury make her passive or decorative.

In The Highlander

Runa Ironvale is a twenty-year-old watchwoman whose leg was shattered when a Stonejaw rider's horse reared on a narrow bridge in sleet as the north split. Her fall was the first blood spilled between the factions, and three rival versions of it spread by evening. Eira and Brynna visited her; she cared more that her crutch was properly balanced than about her leg, and asked them not to let her become a feud. Eira worked her brother's rage out of him by setting him to split firewood, which Brynna then sent to Runa's hearth.

After the books

Her fierce insistence on a balanced crutch remains a detail of survival rather than pity. She remains a young survivor whose anger is part of her claim to a future.
