Cress is useful because they read the seams between official language and street consequence.
In The Godless Priest
Cress-of-the-Lintel is the demon carried by the Red Canal broker Pella, describing itself as carrier, interpreter and commercial adviser. It speaks through the left side of Pella's mouth and her gold left eye under a contract renegotiated annually, a partnership stable enough that Lysa remarked the two sounded married. It identified Morrow on sight, claimed Morrow had stolen its name, and charged a separate fee for not telling every power below what rode in Cassian's ribs.
Cress refused to restore the Canal's lamps by taking every flame's address into itself, since that would have made it the route, and later became the first recognised demon member of the lamp carriers' guild on one third of a shared wage. It navigated during the Canal Thing evacuation under an emergency amendment giving it Pella's left hand, helped design a demon-informed medicine test, and insisted on keeping its name on the result because recognition is safety below. It carried Crowbrook's political questions into sleep, leaving Underworld answers written on Pella's palms. Leaving with the army, it recorded its intention as rescue while Pella recorded trade; their shared entry read that interests were disputed and both departed.
