Pella's work turns the corpse office from a tool of erasure into a place where names can be returned.

Appearance

Pella is broad and bald and dresses in funeral red. A branching purple mark runs from temple to jaw on one side of her face and moves when she draws on her black pipe; when her passenger speaks, her left eye turns entirely gold. Several of her teeth are missing, and her left cheek shows old tears from a dispute with the demon.

In The Godless Priest

Pella is a route broker of the Red Canal, Crowbrook's district of brothels, ferries and funeral lamps, and the host of the demon Cress-of-the-Lintel under a registered arrangement twenty-three years old. Their brass tag divides the body precisely: Cress may use the left eye, the left half of the mouth and limited taste, while each can silence or suspend the other for seven days. She stays with it partly because it found her dead daughter below and delivered a last letter.

She made Cassian witness the kindness ledger of the dying Sela Morn before dealing with him, then sent him into the flooded toll room for Manus Farthing's crossing records and gave him Sable's abandoned token. When the canal's lamps went dark she organised carried light rather than let Cress take the district's addresses into itself, which led to a lamp carriers' guild with Cress as its first demon member. She supervised Sela's funeral and uncovered the switched bodies, led the Red Canal's evacuation when the Canal Thing rose, and with Cress designed the market's first demon-informed safety test.

Her politics are practical and sharp. She demanded that the Red Canal be declared neutral, refused to wash Underworld writing from her palms because it was her skin and her fear, enforced a child's authorship toll on Oren's slogans, threw soldiers who mocked a frozen comrade into the canal, calling it hospitality, and painted PEOPLE on the corpse-carts the army carried.

Pella marched with the army on the corpse-cart line, registering her purpose as trade while Cress claimed rescue; their gate form recorded them as separate travellers sharing one body.
