"Luminglade clung to the hill in its familiar rings of light: emberlines pulsing along basalt walls, wardstones at the forest's edge." East-south-east of Luna (~100 km on the working scale).

  • [Book 2 spoiler]Four separated House territories: Phoenix on the hill's west face, Kraken on the south riverside with its pools, Gorgon on a rocky knoll to the north, Sylph on an eastern ridge beyond the eastern ravine (giant canopy, wind bridges). One House path each to the neutral summit (Council chamber, Mask-year terrace).
  • [Book 2 spoiler]Hush-falls: a stepped spring one night-walk north-east, between the inner and outer ward rings.
  • [Book 2 spoiler]The road to Luna "changed hands" at the last forest marker (the old tithe depot).
  • [Book 2 spoiler]Funeral rites by House: Phoenix, a pyre terrace; Kraken, a river-rite stair down to the water; Gorgon, a cairn field; Sylph, a sky platform. Each House's funeral ground lies inside its own territory.
  • [Book 2 spoiler]Scar-Birth, Phoenix's warded birthing knoll, lies in Phoenix ground west of the Veil-ravine. Each House has its own birthing hill.
  • [Book 2 spoiler]House character: every House has emberlines, but each has its own flavour, and the nature around each camp matches its House (fire and ember-crust for Phoenix, water and pools for Kraken, stone and earth for Gorgon, canopy and wind for Sylph). Timber and rope are allowed in every House camp except the Phoenix.

From the books

Fae from Luminglade appear in Luna for the King's Tournament, walking under watchful guard with dull anti-arcane cuffs around their wrists.

In The Channeler

The Phoenix camp clings to its slope like an ember-crust: chambers carved into basalt, smoke-vents and narrow stairs, and open platforms where braziers hang in iron cages. Its walls carry emberlines, looping channels once filled with molten luminarite and Phoenix ash that pulse with a shared heartbeat. The upper training terrace is a scorched oval ringed with basalt pillars, overlooked by a carved balcony where the Council of Masks watches the Mask-year trials.

The settlement lives by keeping feeling small. Ward-Singers hold the rings with song and drum through the night, Hush-caps are chewed with morning broth or burned along the wardlines, and the young are drilled to breathe in on four and out on eight. Emotion spilled too loudly draws the hollowborn. On the night of the Scar-Birth a Ward-Singer died holding the line, and the wardstones' old red veins were left threaded with Phoenix gold.

The Spire tithe marks every family: everyone in Luminglade has a cousin, an aunt or a child whose tithe name was called and who never came back. In Festival years the Council renews the settlement's pact with Luna's Light, and in The Channeler the Kraken elder warns that rivers are running wrong, barges are vanishing and Hush is rotting before it dries. The land between Luminglade and Luna is full of abandoned ward-posts, collapsed shrines, cottages barred from outside, and stones where tithe caravans stopped returning bodies and began carving names instead.

Seen from the Iron Mountains, Luminglade lies on the road toward the east, beyond which roads thin and Crowbrook rumours thicken. Travellers' news reaching the north speaks of Crowbrook preachers east of Luminglade and of Fae turned away from inns that had happily taken their coin the season before.

As Crowbrook's army approaches, it finds the forest changed: trees burning blue without turning to ash, water climbing roots, and Fae refugees carrying wounded children, broken instruments and House marks cut from their clothes. Fire and Water have crossed boundaries the Houses treated as natural law. Sanctum forces have extracted currents from bodies, and one young woman carries a permanent fusion of Water and Fire beneath her skin, which makes some refugees kneel and others spit.

The refugees refuse the army military passage. A Fire elder tells Crowbrook to take the longer road "and arrive less hated", and a water-wielding Fae named Nimra holds the boundary with a living root braided with hair and fish bones. Instead of an alliance the two sides open a medicine route around the forest, exchanging black poppy, bandages and iron for news, road conditions and "remembered water" that recognises poison. As the army leaves, smoke rises behind Luminglade. Near the end of the book, Fae refugees have opened a medicine road toward Luminglade that offers a way out for those endangered in Luna.
