Neris Tideglass carries Kraken calm like armour. Water listens to her hands; the river’s moods make sense to her in ways people rarely do. In the field she steadies, bandaging burns with cold precision, speaking only what matters. Where Maerin is lightning and Elias is tinder, Neris is the measured tide: not gentle, but dependable, and dangerous when it finally rises.
Appearance
Neris has dark hair braided with river-glass and dark eyes in a face made for calm water: a steady mouth and nothing wasted. Water often shimmers along her knuckles when she flexes her hands.
In The Channeler
Neris Tideglass is a Kraken trainee in her Mask-year, cool, precise and unflinchingly honest. Nyssa sent her with the Emberfall twins and Maerin on the Hush-cap harvest, where she guided them to the falls by following the dips where water once ran, taught them how to twist rather than rip the caps, and calmly named the hollowborn's hunger for what it was. When Maerin was burned she cooled the wound and dressed it, and she threatened to drown the Stalker Corren if he laid a hand on her. Back in Luminglade she discovered with Nyssa that the Phoenix Hush stores had been cut with chalk.
The Council named her Kraken's tithe, and she chose to go, telling Elias it was because they wanted him alone. Before leaving she grew close to Vael by the cisterns, telling him he did not have to be useful every breath, and she taught Elias that water does not defeat fire but gives it a shore. On the road she quietly recorded cart marks, drivers and seals, following the habits of the tithe until they led to Leth's name, and in the Lower Sanctum she used her signet to reach a room of tithe ledgers.
Under Kael's tests she was forced to regulate Fenn's suffering, learning that every success only showed Kael how much more pain her care allowed. After the storm discipline she healed Maerin until her own lips split and the vessels in her eyes burst. In the Lower Sanctum she found Vael after he slipped away and the two became lovers, but she recognised a distance in him that tenderness could not close.
When Elias's fire fused with Maerin's storm in the reagent room, Neris spoke the old healer's prayer to Mora that every sensible Kraken hopes never to use, offering every drop her gift would ever keep for her. Maerin's heart restarted, and the price took hold: Neris's gift still answers others, but will never again turn inward to save her. Soon afterwards she slapped Elias out of his stupor after his encounter with Inaris and told him to do the next unheroic thing.
In the escape she flooded corridors to slow the guards, shielded the others when Leth pulled the air from the chamber, and in Kael's last laboratory reversed the coolant that turned the apparatus on its maker, weeping as he died. The book leaves her in the changed dawn, drinking ordinary water because her gift curves away from her own cracked lips.
