Ancient monarch of Luna: a ruler of ceremony, inheritance, and quiet brutality. His court runs on light, law, and lineage, and everyone beneath the crown is a piece on the board.

Appearance

Aurelion is an aged elf, imposing yet frail, with silvery white hair falling behind pointed ears hung with luminarite-infused gold jewellery. His eyes glow gold with an otherworldly light, every line of his face is deeply wrinkled, and he dresses in forest green and luminarite gold robes. He leans on a tall cane made entirely of shimmering luminarite crystal. Later in the book it becomes clear that he is blind.

In The Outcast Knight

King Aurelion Solastis rules Luna from the Citadel at the start of the book, and his decline drives much of its plot. His reign enforces elven purity: the slums are left to rot while luminarite light pours over the wealthy districts, Old Speak is forbidden, and the Fae are banned from the city even as two of them are secretly chained beneath the Radiant bank to power its lights. Usso blames luminarite for turning the King's eyes gold and his heart rotten. Among his past cruelties, a man named Harlen lost his limbs for touching a portrait of the King's dead wife, and the three knights who protested were thrown into the crypt and then into the tournament.

Under his edict the slum girl Haelara Halmund was taken as his bride. When her father, Tragus, killed a guard trying to save her, Aurelion had him hanged in the trade square before his daughter, then announced that Haelara carried his child and that this heir would outrank his elder sons. At a family dinner he revealed his contempt for her and for everyone at the table, named Alerion captain of the guard in Astarion's place, and threatened to see them all dead rather than let any of them wear his crown. He ordered the half-bloods questioned after the bank raid, dismissed Balorin's warnings about Eamon as corruption from distant Crowbrook, and kept the full guard with him for the tournament, telling the priests to let the dark have the slums.

On the morning of the tournament he woke tormented, blind and torn between disgust and longing as he watched Haelara sleep. In a brief moment of clarity he wondered whether the taint lay in his own blood rather than in theirs, but he twisted it into a renewed conviction that he must purify the world. He watched Fi kill Alerion, and, falling back on his old soldier's discipline, proclaimed her the victor. After that his mind gave way. He refused to attend his son's cremation, screeched at Balorin's warnings and had him removed, and wandered the gardens speaking to hedges.

The council judged Luna effectively leaderless. Astarion persuaded his father to make a pilgrimage to Eldanarë Haven, a sanctuary of untouched elven light, and Aurelion left by ship that night. On the voyage he raved to shadows and crates, called for Alerion, and scrubbed his arms until they bled to rid himself of something impure. The book states plainly that Luna would never see him again.

In The Channeler

King Aurelion is mentioned only in passing. Near the end of the book, a dispatch lying open in Brother Kael's final laboratory reports that Prince Alerion is dead and that King Aurelion has departed towards Eldanare, leaving Astarion Solastis holding Luna in practice.

After the books

Known after the books as Aurelion Solastis. Former King (departed Luna). Luna would never see him again. He does not fall cleanly: he unravels. The crown leaves his head, but not his mind; what remains is a wandering ruin of authority, muttering prophecy and grievance as though the world still answers.
