Mera Firehand holds the Phoenix chair with a voice like a snapped whip and breathing patterns that never fail. She is discipline elevated into policy: what Phoenix can afford, what it cannot, and which sacrifices buy tomorrow. She does not want to surrender both Emberfall brothers. She will surrender one, because she is ruthless enough to survive.

Appearance

On the Council Mera sits behind the blackened steel mask of Phoenix, her shoulders wrapped in a cloak the colour of cooled embers. Her hair brightens at the ends when her temper rises.

In The Channeler

Mera Firehand is the Phoenix elder on the Council of Masks, crisp, disciplined and political. She chaired the session that decided the tithe, refused to surrender both Emberfall brothers for Liora's sake, and named Elias as the one Phoenix could afford to lose for a decade. She promised an audit of the thinning Hush stores but moved slowly, and Nyssa resented the way politics put its hand over her instincts. In private she shares a long, tender partnership with Tovin Firehand, and the two of them showed Nyssa how Phoenix lovers could master their shared fire.

When Nyssa broke open the stores and proved the Hush had been poisoned under Leth's seal, Mera demanded proof that would survive Council denial, then committed herself. She travelled to the Lower Sanctum with Tovin, blew open the corridor when Kael sprang his trap, and caught Nyssa as she died. In the escape she burned the cell locks, seared shut Leth's severed wrist, and stayed with Nyssa's body all the way out. At the Festival court she struck down a priest reaching for an explanation, declaring that the prisoners had had enough rooms.
