Yrsa works with ore, blood and craft, applying patient care to dangerous questions.
Appearance
Yrsa's hair has gone iron-white at the temples though she is not old, and burn scars web her fingers from blades that objected to being forged.
In The Highlander
Yrsa Flintkiss is the smith of the Ember Forges below Stonevein, where warriors lower their voices unasked. She examined Varkhul's blood and concluded that it was not possession but counterfeit: something was teaching beasts to imitate the weight of an oath. She told Eira to listen before swinging when Redress spoke, and to say less than she knew at the Red Moot.
She traced Ink Hollow ore into the forges, found ledger marks showing the sealed mine had been reopened under Stonevein authority, and a dead clerk holding a strip burned with "stand, guide, return". After a cooling knife screamed and a young apprentice confessed to helpful thoughts at the anvil, she created the black ledger, a record of every small forge wrongness, with rules such as speaking mistakes aloud before work. The ledger caught black-veined coal in Branok's new supply system.
Branok adopted half her objections and overruled the rest. She forged the first burden-blade for Rannoch while admitting she feared useful horrors more than useless ones, and when Ilda Greyfur's blade failed she told Branok his process, not grief, had left the opening. She went into the Ink Hollow twice, fought to save Bair Stonehand, and confessed over Mauda's salt bowl that she had played down the mine's danger because she did not want Branok to be right. When Eira left for Luna, Yrsa sent a sealed packet of proof and a red ore needle wrapped in black-stained cloth.
