Sable's fear is recognition, not disgust, when she sees what the mountain crisis has revealed.

Appearance

Sable is about half the size of the Highlanders around her, wrapped in layered brown cloth hiding many pockets. Old lines of black ink stain one side of her neck, neither active nor healed. Her coat carries ugly Crowbrook charms of knotted hair, black wax and tiny bones carved with closed mouths.

In The Highlander

Sable is a Crowbrook woman from the Outer Reach beyond Luminglade who reached Stonevein with a trader caravan. She was glimpsed early, unnamed, leaving Branok's hall with what looked like recognition rather than disgust. Questioned under guard, she warned that Crowbrook was gathering priests with demons in them, and told Branok and Torin they were not as different from Crowbrook's marked as they wished. She offended nearly everyone, a goat included, and survived by making irritation entertaining before it became violence. Within six hours of arriving she had gathered enough gossip to greet Eira by her reputation, and Yrsa judged her either useful or fatal.

Her knowledge proved essential. She identified "stand, guide, return" as leash syntax rather than prayer, described demons as hunger, old wounds and outside things wearing local sins, and warned that Branok's demon was contained, not conquered. She spoke of rumours of a Godless Priest in Crowbrook who preached keeping the demon while denying the god, which she called a rhyme with Branok. Her charms, she explained, did not protect so much as remind, giving a person one breath to notice that wanting was happening, and of the Eamon Farthing rumours she said that adults build doors while children are blamed for what walks through. In the Ink Hollow she drew salt circles, recognised the presence behind the name wall as a priest's shadow wearing something older, and threw Torin the curved knife and instructions he needed to free Bair Stonehand.

She travelled south with Eira, telling bleak jokes to make room for grief, burning charms against Varkhul's procession of lesser beasts, and disposing of the corpse by burning its ink inward with salt, red ore and charms. She offered Eira a Crowbrook reading of Torin's return of Dagna's charm, as a rope tied around what remained of him. At the North Beacon she was struck for mocking official calm. In Luna she slipped away to hunt Crowbrook agents and returned with a stolen priest's ledger speaking of an eastern muster and a vessel "prepared but not crowned". She chose to stay in the city, leaving Eira a black glass bead that warms near Crowbrook rites.

In The Godless Priest

Sable does not appear in person in The Godless Priest, but her influence reached Crowbrook twice. In the Red Canal, Pella gave Cassian Sable's abandoned token, a piece of black bone carved with a sable on one face and a road ending at a broken tower on the other, explaining that Sable had abandoned the route before Manus Farthing's last journey and had gone where people go when every side wants their map.

Later, on the march, her warning arrived inside the heel bone of the dead smuggler Rowan Reed. Pella recognised her hand, since she misspells "authority" on purpose. The message used three codes, partly to make any demon reading it reveal its affiliation, and stated that Luna was wounded but not fallen, that Branok was useful and dangerous, that Torin was not absolved, that the ink names were real, and that roads must hold without becoming chains. Above all, it warned the army not to speak as one mouth. Toma copied its final lines onto every permission roll against Mother Vey's wishes, and Crowbrook sent back a reply that Sable might never receive.

After the books

Her warnings link the northern and Crowbrook fronts as the wider danger develops. She remains a morally exacting witness to the consequences of survival and power.
