Elias Emberfall is Scar-Birth: the boy whose first breath rewrote wardstones, whose Phoenix sigil still remembers the taste of gold-hot lines. His power wants to pour; his training teaches him to thread it: breathe, pattern, hold. He fears becoming a holy weapon in Luna’s hands, fears hurting the people he cannot afford to lose, and fears most the moment he stops counting breaths and starts wanting.
Appearance
Elias shares his twin's height and build but carries himself with more weight and heat, and his shoulders are broader. Ember-freckles run across his cheekbones and brighten under the skin whenever his core stirs, and when his fire slips its leash the short hair at his crown lifts and burns with a soft white-gold flame that does not harm him.
In The Channeler
Elias Emberfall is the Phoenix half of the Emberfall twins, born on the night remembered in Luminglade as Scar-Birth. His mother, Liora, died moments after his birth, and when the Veil-Sister Nyssa branded him the mark detonated, burning a pack of hollowborn to ash and etching new Phoenix-gold lines into the camp's wardstones. He grew up raised by Nyssa beside his quiet brother Vael, drilled endlessly in the breathing Pattern and the rule of feeling in threads, not floods.
When the book opens he is a Mask-year trainee who walks the emberlines well but fears his own power, dreaming of light pouring out of him without consent. On the Hush-cap harvest beyond the inner ring he grew close to the Sylph trainee Maerin Stormwake, and when she slipped past the outer wardstones he followed her. There, persuaded to stop counting his breaths for once, he lost control and burned her side through her brand, drawing hollowborn to the gap. The incident fed his deepest fear: that he was a danger to everyone he loved.
The Council of Masks named him as Phoenix's tithe to the Spire alongside Maerin, Neris Tideglass and Fenn Stoneborn. Before he left, Nyssa taught him that desire need not be his enemy, and he and Maerin became lovers, careful and frightened. On the road to Luna his flare at a templar who manhandled Maerin drew a hollowborn that wounded a guard, an early lesson in how others paid for what he felt.
In the Lower Sanctum beneath Luna, Brother Kael measured him. Kael discovered that Elias's fire burned hottest not for his own pain but for the pain of those he loved, and used Maerin to prove it. In the paired storm discipline Elias deliberately overloaded the response governor and cracked it, but Maerin lost her left eye. Kael then tempted him with drops of a stilling draught; Elias refused the third drop, banking his anger rather than spending it, though he admitted that part of him wanted the quiet more after saying no.
His lowest point came in the old reagent room. In a moment of unguarded joy his fire poured into Maerin and fused permanently with her storm, nearly killing her. Locked away afterwards, he was visited by Inaris, the god of stillness, who offered to take every feeling away. Elias refused him, choosing to grieve and burn rather than become the god's grave, though Inaris promised he would ask again.
When Kael trapped them all in the channeling frame, Nyssa died taking the current in their place, and Elias called her mother as she spent herself. He went on with Vael, Neris and Fenn to Kael's last laboratory, where he burned the outgoing dispatch to ash and helped turn Kael's own apparatus against him, while recognising that what they did there was not justice.
In the escape that followed, Elias found what the book names him for. Rather than flooding a corridor with fire, he learned to send it as a single thread, cutting locks, hinges and the corrupted beads at the throats of thralls and nothing else. Vael found the path and Elias lit it. The book leaves him in the scorched dawn over Luna, alive, keeping his hands from Maerin, aware that Inaris still watches and waits.

After the books
Channeler. Survives the Sanctum crisis on the Channeler path: scarred by Maerin's permanent injury, Nyssa's sacrifice, Inaris's offer, and the first true lesson of threading fire into purpose instead of flood. Elias earns the Channeler path not by overwhelming the world with Scar-Birth fire, but by forcing that fire into thread, task, and witness. He survives knowing love can burn, restraint can hurt, and Inaris will ask again.
