Brother Kael is the polished cruelty beneath the Creed's clean robes: an elven Sanctum examiner who treats pain, desire, shame, and loyalty as reagents. He does not merely serve the Arch Luminar; he gives doctrine a laboratory and enjoys every scream it produces.
Appearance
Kael has a smooth, unlined, handsome face that seems assembled rather than earned. He wears Sanctum white and carries a small luminarite crystal at his throat, clouded with bruised colours that shift whenever feeling sharpens in a room.
In The Channeler
Brother Kael is the Lower Sanctum Examiner, who arrived in Luminglade a half-step behind Brother Adresin carrying a case of instruments. Where Adresin made the tithe lawful, Kael decided what to do with those it delivered. Before the Council of Masks he offered refined luminarite dampeners in place of Hush-caps, at the price of young Fae to calibrate them, and named the four currents he wanted: fire, stone, air and water, with Vael's absence beside them.
In the chamber below the envoy suite he experimented on the struggling Phoenix trainee Uren Ashline, using prepared luminarite shards to draw out his fear, his sense of duty, and finally his memories and self, while Leth Serane watched. He held Leth through the file of his dead daughter Saren, using it to force his cooperation and to stop him when Leth tried to let Uren escape.
In the Lower Sanctum beneath Luna Kael ran the tithed candidates through a response governor, measuring pain, fear and attachment, and discovered that Elias's fire surged hardest for Maerin's suffering. He drove the paired storm discipline until Maerin lost an eye, then sent her a glass eye as a marker of success, and tempted Elias with drops of a stilling draught. When Vael came seeking his brother, Kael captured him and studied the lock with no keyhole.
Kael let the group gather around Maerin after the reagent room, then trapped the twins and Maerin in a channeling frame. Nyssa's death broke the draw and fractured his crystal. When Leth turned on him, Kael severed Leth's hand with a shearing lever, drank a black vial that seemed to sharpen him into something colder, and escaped. Some of his work had already been sent up the dispatch line.
He made a final stand in a preparation chamber below the Festival square, binding himself into a preservation cradle meant to copy his work outwards. Elias burned the dispatch, and Vael, Fenn and Neris turned the apparatus inward. Kael died inside his own machine, refined by it exactly as he had designed, and Elias burned the reservoir of what it took. Leth warned afterwards that the notes which escaped would teach the First Sanctum which parts of people no longer needed removing.

After the books
Dead. Dies before the end of the books. Killed during the Channeler crisis. Kael dies in the machinery he used to reduce others, but his work succeeds enough to matter. The permanent obedience formula survives him and becomes a seed for the Arch Luminar's later emotionless templars.
