Luna flora

Also known as Luna plants

Climate

  • Luna is cool, temperate and oceanic.

Native and allowed

  • The spire cypress is native.
  • Ruinbloom (buddleia-like, purple spikes) is allowed in the slums, on roofs, walls and gutters.
  • Lampmoss, a faint pale-gold moss, grows near luminarite. Luminglade's ward trees glow faintly (see Luminglade).
  • Moss or crack weeds may show on slum stair treads in the material only; no foliage meshes on stairs.

Sunward rarities

  • Sunward potted citrus and figs appear in noble courtyards as a rarity, only where they would survive the season (overwintered under glass or in sheltered courtyards).

From the books

Gardens of the upper city

The Outcast Knight sets the residential district apart by its planting. Its gardens spill flowers over the walls, the air smells of pine and warm bread, and each house on the neat terraces has its own small garden. Flower boxes line the clean alleys. Night-jasmine blooms along streets that curve "like a lover's spine", and a yew tree stands on one of the residential streets, where Orwen waits for Fi and Usso at midnight.

The castle has gardens of its own. In a quiet corner Astarion and Haelara meet beneath an arch of climbing roses whose petals look ghost-pale by moonlight, and the failing King Aurelion wanders the outer gardens talking to clipped hedges and empty air. By contrast, the old graveyard where Oakren lies has only dead grass, which cracks in the wind.

The country around the city

In The Channeler, the land between Luminglade and Luna is a country that most maps reduce to simple green: trees, an old road, a river, a low hill. In truth it is full of abandoned ward-posts, mossed markers and collapsed shrines. The hidden routes beneath it run between chalk banks, with roots threading the ceilings. The First Sanctum's envoy warns that before long Luna's own grassland will be overrun with hollowborn.

In The Godless Priest, Crowbrook's army leaves the trees and finds a wide open plain of pale grass on the road towards Luna. Luna's road priests have driven gold nails into the ground at measured intervals along it.

Flowers at the Festival

When Eira reaches Luna in The Highlander, the Festival has filled the outer district with flower carts, which block the military wagons in the streets. To her the city smells of too much incense and hot metal "under flowers", and the tournament district of flowers laid over blood. When a priest blocks her on the outer Spire road, she shoulders him into a flower cart and the petals burst around him.
