The architect

  • [Book 1 spoiler]Ferrin is the architect of the Radiant Bank, the tunnels under Luna and his own workshop. He wrote the blueprints; others built them.
  • [Book 1 spoiler]Usso says he "built half the vaults in this city"; Ferrin calls the bank vaults "my children". The service aqueduct under the Luminarite Gallery is "my design", and the tunnel was laid fifty years before Book 1, when he "was still proud to serve the crown".
  • [Book 1 spoiler]His maker's mark, a small 8-spoke wheel beside each keystone, is a clue players can notice.
  • [Book 1 spoiler]His touch is subtle on public faces and fuller in service and mechanism spaces. The bank's street front stays elven; client-facing fittings are elven gold or gilt, and his brass belongs to mechanisms.
  • [Book 1 spoiler]He carries an architect's sigil that opens hidden luminarite runes, and joins the Radiant Bank heist.

Reconciliation with the guild houses

  • [Book 1 spoiler]The oldest vaults and cisterns are Jadebane guild work (see Dwarves). Ferrin, an adult architect (about 50-100) in the late elven-rule era, drew the original bank vaults, which Jadebane crews built. He laid the service aqueduct and tunnel about 137 AL (age about 237), and the bank above it was expanded afterwards. The book makes the aqueduct and tunnel his own.

Look in the books

  • [Book 1 spoiler]Shorter than Usso by a head, dark skin, copper-wired beard braided with gears, luminarite rings on every finger, a mechanical bird in the window.

Scope of his work

  • [Book 1 spoiler]Ferrin is mostly responsible for the Radiant Bank. The city's main aqueduct and water works are older elven work (Luna's civic works); his service aqueduct and tunnel are a later addition to it.
  • [Book 1 spoiler]The district sewers are Ferrin-designed brick. The Great Drain trunk is not his: it is oath-era dwarven work.

Appearance

Ferrin is a dwarf a head shorter than Usso, with skin dark as forge-coal and a beard braided with copper wire and tiny gears that click when he moves. Luminarite rings glint on every finger, and he often wears a hat and goggles.

In The Outcast Knight

Ferrin Stonecleaver is a dwarven tinkerer and architect who built many of Luna's vaults, including the Radiant bank, whose tunnels he laid fifty years earlier when he was still proud to serve the crown. Fi and Usso found him in his noisy workshop in the residential district, crowded with blueprints, ticking clocks and half-built contraptions. A quick-tongued showman, he agreed to supply the vault plans if they cleared his debt to Shen at Moonlit Serenity, and on condition that he came along to reclaim Levitas, a banned gravity orb he had built that was held in the vault's Core. He mended Usso's shattered arm with a healing draught and warned them about Shen, though he later felt he should have warned them harder.

Ferrin led the break-in through his own forgotten service aqueduct. In the Luminarite Gallery he nearly succumbed to the pull of a luminarite orb until Fi caught his wrist, and in the security room he made a stunned guard look drunk on duty. Finding Kara and Iskander chained as living batteries beneath the Invisible Bridge he had built was a blow to him, and on the way out he forced Kara's lock. Levitas went dark at his touch, but he took it, and later used its power to charge the cuffs that let the two Fae leap over the city walls. Afterwards he declared that, having built half the cages in the city, it was time he helped break a few, and he introduced Fi to Fate Mistwreath.

During the tournament he entered the castle with Usso and Haelara and created a distraction when an old man with a cane appeared in the library. He recognised the sigil on the stolen map as the Eye of Luna, and after Fi's victory he and Usso designed the traps for the Lightspire: blessed luminarite chains, sigils meant to turn the demons against one another, and a luminarite condenser. Before the ritual, Fi told him to keep building. A shard from the bursting chains wounded his thigh, and he ended the book on a crutch, insisting that even the unknown could be measured and mapped.

After the books

In the aftermath, invention stops being novelty and becomes necessity. Ferrin adapts, because dwarves always do.
