Ravel treats people as people even when the surrounding systems demand categories and uses.

Appearance

Ravel's body carries the history of Black Mercy in pale scars: a crescent beneath one breast where a plague child bit her, three puckered marks across the stomach from a penitent's transformed fingers, and a surgical cut along the hip she once directed while conscious. During the Canal Thing she lost two fingers of her left hand, which changed the shape of her grip for the rest of the book.

In The Godless Priest

Sister Ravel Ash is the senior surgeon of Black Mercy, Crowbrook's hospice, and Cassian Veyr's partner of fourteen years. She is blunt, profane and exact, distrustful of philosophy that has never changed a bandage, and she insists on precise words because, in her phrase, paraphrase is how possession becomes personality. She and Cassian are lovers but not married; she once refused him marriage, along with morphine and her good scissors.

Ravel operated on Hess Marrow, amputated Kem's possessed leg, stitched Lysa Farthing and kept public drug counts after discovering that Black Mercy's black poppy had been diluted and diverted to the Penitent Companies. She refused to let Bellad touch hosts without her approval, helped free the clerk Sennic from the Choir's threads, and made the nursery children write their own protective rules. She repeatedly held Cassian to account, striking him after he paid for Sennic's restoration with a memory of his sister without asking her to witness it.

Their relationship was intimate and argumentative in equal measure. After the Witness Pit she made him confess plainly that he had wanted the information more than he wanted Jerrik unhurt, and when Morrow imitated her voice during their encounter she stopped at once and threatened the demon until it formally withdrew from sensation. She recorded afterwards that pleasure did not confirm trust. At his trial she refused to lie for him, testifying that Oren would probably have survived the preparation circle while insisting that medicine is not the art of preserving a body for whichever authority reaches it first.

When Mother Vey requisitioned Black Mercy and demanded obedience compound for the army, Ravel burned the formula in public, survived the administrative siege that followed, and secretly developed a counteragent, testing it on her own body under an obedience dose. Her refusal had costs she recorded herself: an apprentice's dosage error nearly killed Kem, and she later released the formula when partial knowledge spread. During the Canal Thing she climbed inside the creature, marked the living among the dead and destroyed the stolen child-heart controlling it, accepting responsibility for twenty-three captives who died as a result.

Ravel marched with the army not, she insisted, to keep Cassian good but because the obedience doses remained in command stores. She kept the right to oppose him, examined Mother Vey's openings, and joined Cassian and Toma in a compact to keep the army plural. The book leaves her with the medicine wagons on the road to Luna, short of poppy and counteragent, still reading the dead by name.
