Suth's comic evasions sit beside the serious pressures facing Ironvale.

In The Highlander

Suth is an Ironvale elder whose hearing vanishes whenever work is mentioned and returns with uncanny precision for gossip. At the Red Moot feast he answered Dagna's mocking compliment with "Liar. Good girl", and after Mauda sang the old pact he asked Caelis why Luna remembered the mountains only when it needed ore. He joined the hunt for Varkhul because he remembered old trails when he chose to. He would not meet Eira's eye at her oath, and afterwards warned that Ironvale, with old names and thin stores, could not afford to be symbolic. When she left he gave her her father's whetstone, complaining it was wasted on someone reckless.
