The exiles' city at the far north-eastern edge of the Outer Reach. It was founded in 702 BL by the humans, dwarves and dissenting elves who fled the Fall of Luna. It survived the Great War by blood magic.

The city holds about 110,000 people, in a realm of about 280,000 that includes canal villages and quarries.

From the books

In The Outcast Knight, Crowbrook is known in Luna only by reputation. When blood magic surfaces in the city, King Aurelion calls it filth that festers in Crowbrook and vows not to let the Godless corruption of that distant cesspit creep into Luna.

In the north, "Crowbrook" is a word for any black ink Luna wants to blame on someone else. Sable, a Crowbrook exile, describes it as a city that survives by making horror domestic: a voice in the wall becomes a household saint and a possessed aunt a family arrangement, and most of its people are exiles who grew tired and called compromise a theology. In her stories for children, its priests wear bells on their boots so demons cannot creep up their trouser legs. Her Crowbrook charms are knotted hair, black wax and tiny bones carved with closed mouths, meant less to protect than to remind. Border villages hang Crowbrook saint tokens turned backward so as to offend no one in particular.

By the end of the book Crowbrook is gathering rather than raiding: priests carrying demons, soldiers who kneel to no Light and banners with mouths painted shut. Its pilgrims and preachers reach Luna for the Festival, and a ledger found there refers to an eastern muster and a "godless vessel prepared but not crowned".

Black Mercy has no prayer room. It has six operating tables, two furnaces, locked drug cabinets, red bottle-glass windows and iron shutters, and a carved motto declaring mercy an act, not an intention. Patients are sorted by what will kill them first, with coloured cords for blood loss, fever, a speaking passenger or a body too dangerous to touch, and public drug boards record every dose for anyone to challenge.

The Red Canal's lamps signal contracts, and its Canal Saints witness consent, debt and refusal. Corpses cross it in sprung carts under red awnings while drivers ring one bell for the dead and one for anything inside them. Saint Drev is named for a plague physician and grave robber whom the city made a god after he cured six streets by burning the seventh; his chapel was abandoned when citizens found the plague stone under the altar still breathing. Saintweed Market, roofed in coloured cloth, requires every drug to show its price as medicine, pleasure and dependence.

Crowbrook law requires thirty witnesses for a sanctioned extraction in the Witness Pit, and public punishments must survive an hour in which any citizen may name a foreseeable abuse. Before the march, the Witness Mothers seize the refuge ledgers and reallocate cellar places by name and dependency, children first. The army that leaves cannot march in step by design: the Witness Mothers replace numbered companies with district names such as Red Canal, Black Mercy, Saint Drev, Ash Market and Quarry North, each keeping its own customs on the road.
