Uren Ashline

Uren Ashline is a Phoenix Mask-year boy whose laughter once ran ahead of his discipline. Kael removes him quietly, breaks him early, and leaves behind a child who answers cues better than names.

Appearance

Uren is a Phoenix trainee of Mask-year age whose eyes were once the colour of cooled emberstone. After Kael's work they turn pale and milky.

In The Channeler

Uren Ashline is a Phoenix trainee who panicked on the emberlines during the Mask-year trials. Judged unlikely to be chosen for Festival duty, he was handed by Leth Serane to Brother Kael, who used prepared luminarite shards to drain his fear, his sense of duty and finally his memories and self. Leth hid him in the Veil cells under the name of remedial discipline.

Vael visited him three times, finding him unable to understand the word want, and gave him Elias's spare Phoenix charm, which briefly stirred something like pain. Uren could do little more than repeat a care-word and hum three notes. He was then forwarded to Sanctum custody under Leth's sigil. In the Lower Sanctum Leth tried to let him escape down a drainage stair but called him back under Kael's threat.

Uren survived the final upheaval, clutching the copper feather and singing a fragment of an old ward-song. Freed prisoners led him out, and he stepped first into the Festival court light, humming, the book offering no sign that what Kael took will return.

After the books

Survives, but remains low-functioning and unrecovered after Kael's first successful obedience experiment. Uren survives, but not whole. He remains low-functioning, obedient, and terrifyingly calm: proof that Kael's first formula could make a living person easier to command than to save.
