Luminarite crystal lamps light the trade district and the upper city of elven Luna. The slums are lit by thin flame lanterns. The gap between the two is a deliberate story and visual beat.

In the books

  • [Book 1 spoiler]The edge of the trade district: "Luminarite lamps cast a clean, pale glow over orderly stalls and shuttered shops." It's an abrupt change from the smoke and rot of the slum alleys.
  • [Book 1 spoiler]Residential streets at midnight have "luminarite lamps throwing cold halos". The lamps are "still glowing from the night" at dawn.
  • [Book 1 spoiler]A luminarite crystal's glow shifts "from dawn-gold to winter-white".
  • [Book 1 spoiler]Rain hisses on the lamps. They can flicker "like dying stars".
  • [Book 1 spoiler]The King keeps "his precious lights burning" by milking captive channelers.
  • [Book 1 spoiler]In the slums, "The lantern light outside was thin and sickly." The trade district's "oppressive glow of the luminarite" contrasts with the "blighted slums". Beyond the city's "holy glow" lies "the deeper dark".

From the books

Light by district

In the residential quarter, every house on the neat terraces has its own pair of lamplights burning warm and bright. Ferrin's workshop in the upper residential district stands under the "unyielding" glow of the luminarite lamps along the street, which shines in through his windows all night. Fi finds the light unnatural and says that living under it all the time unsettles people, "like the sun that never sets". On a night when the holy glow is unwelcome, Ferrin's workshop is lit by ordinary lamps instead.

The lamps also track the city's mood. As the crisis deepens, the lamps burn brighter than ever, as though light alone could hold back the dark, and the narrative adds that it could not. Fi stops beneath a dying luminarite lamp, which flickers once and goes dark above her and Usso. After Astarion leaves Usso's tavern on the eve of the duel with Alerion, the street outside lies dark where the luminarite should have hummed. Balorin follows the possessed boy's trail through narrow alleys past extinguished lamps.

At the Festival of Light, luminarite lanterns are strung through the streets "like captive stars", and labourers from the outer villages stare at them wide-eyed. When the sky turns purple after the ritual, the lanterns go on burning, but their glow looks wrong.

Beneath the city

The Channeler's glossary lists Luna's lamps first among the uses of luminarite, before rites, weapons, wards and Sanctum workings. In the Lower Sanctum, frosted lamps and strips of luminarite are laid deliberately to drain Fae power. Deeper down, lamps burn behind frosted glass so that no one can touch the flame. Old lamp-pipes run beneath the streets, and Vael twice mistakes their warmth for his brother.

The north road and the violet night

The North Beacon, a white tower threaded with luminarite on the last rise before Luna's outer farms, signals with a luminarite lens. Gold pulses mark road status, white marks weather, red shutters mark military hazard and blue marks royal courier priority. The code has no violet, because the Light was never expected to bruise. At the beacon, Eira first sees "luminarite sickness": the lens stays whole and beautiful, but its gold turns too precise before violet spreads through it like a bruise under glass.

Inside Luna, the purple sky makes Eira's runeblade Redress and the luminarite lamps cast opposing shadows. Then the Spire pulses and every luminarite lamp on the street goes dark for three breaths, leaving Redress the only light, and frightened people turn towards it. When the lamps stutter back, they are weak and edged with violet.
