Liora Emberfall was Phoenix to the bone: ember-freckled, unflinching, and furious enough to laugh through pain. In the Scar-Birth she demanded what the Council would have called imbalance: that both sons be marked, whatever the cost. The cost was her life. The wardlines held. The forest smoked. And Liora became the first name in a promise that refuses to die.
Appearance
Liora carries the faint ember-freckles that mark her as Phoenix, which dim grain by grain as she dies.
In The Channeler
Liora Emberfall is the mother of Vael and Elias, and her death opens the book. A Phoenix woman known for her discipline, she gave birth in the stone birthing chamber of Luminglade while hollowborn pressed against the wardline, attended by the Veil-Sister Nyssa. Rumour in the nests linked her to a quiet man from downriver, and fearing one of her sons might run cool, she bound Nyssa by oath to brand both boys Phoenix, insisting they were hers and emberborn.
She named each twin as he arrived, Vael first and then the blazing Elias, saw them both for one unguarded moment, and died. Her oath shaped Nyssa's life thereafter: Nyssa invoked it against the Council, and as she died in the Lower Sanctum the machine drew out her memories of Liora's last breath. The book closes that chapter by declaring Liora's debt paid.
