Darian Venn

Darian's office and records survive the violence that killed him.

In The Godless Priest

Darian Venn was a grey-robed clerk in the Synod archives and a member of Mara Venn's family. During the Saintweed Market riot a possessed severed leg named him as the supplier of adulterated medicine. Bellad caught him at the gate, opened his hand with a hook and, when the demon confirmed enough true detail to make its lie believable, drove the hook into his heart. Darian died looking confused. His satchel showed he had been investigating the switched funeral bodies, and his hidden red ledger contained complaints, not orders. The Choir had used Bellad's certainty to remove him in retaliation for Mara being recorded against erasure. Manus Farthing's map was later found beneath the floor of his burned office, and Bellad recorded his death as an error.

After the books

Dead before the main events; his name is restored as evidence rather than exploited as a relic. His death becomes part of the case against methods that make pain useful to power.
