Appearance

Haelun has rich auburn hair, the colour of autumn leaves, falling in a cascade of curls around a face of soft, gentle features.

In The Outcast Knight

Haelun Lightwind is a priest of Luna's cathedral and Balorin Dawnbringer's partner, known for his quiet wisdom and gentle conviction that the Light loves even those who curse it. He stood beside Balorin when Eamon was taken in, and witnessed the boy's murder of the priestess Lira, whose dying look found him across the nave. When Eamon escaped, Haelun held Balorin's hand and promised they would face it together, and he went with him to warn the King.

During the tournament, with most of the clergy in the stands, Haelun found Eamon trembling before a shard of luminarite, on the verge of giving in to the demons. He drew the boy away and told him that true power lies in refusing the darkness, and that he was still a boy who could choose. The demons answered by ordering Eamon to scar him. Living shadow pinned Haelun to the flagstones while Eamon carved a binding sigil into his chest, a brand meant to claim him for Perdition. As the corruption spread and his voice began to change, Haelun begged Balorin to act, then guided the sanctified dagger to his own heart and died saying he loved him. The brand faded to an ordinary scar, its prize denied.

Balorin held his body until dawn and later vowed at his bier to carry on for him. Haelun's choice of death over corruption became Fi's example when she agreed to the sacrificial ritual.
