Vell belongs to the shelter and its practical work, not to a claimed origin story.

Appearance

Fully emerged, Vell is no larger than a rat, a faceless shape of folded black membrane covered in blue postal marks. For most of the book it lived as a small second ear behind Oren's left ear.

In The Godless Priest

Vell is a minor courier of the Archivist that lived behind the ear of the street child Oren, a courier that had lost its message and survived by stealing small pieces of identity. It whispered when people lied, and it stole a child's memory of a plum and returned it under pressure. When Oren drew in Black Mercy's kindness ledger, it remembered its full name, Vell-of-the-Last-Errand, and allowed Oren to call it Vell. Ravel made it repeat that uncertain is not secret, and the nursery children turned its overconfidence into a game.

Vell cooperated with the Synod's attempt to open Oren's mark because the Outer Crown offered it amnesty for desertion and a route home, and it admitted afterwards that it had said yes from fear. It later flooded Oren's widened mark with warnings when the Archivist noticed him, and the two signed a narrower contract allowing only a few words, including "afraid", before consent. Before the army left, Oren and Vell agreed to a mutual separation in a circle of chosen witnesses. Vell departed below carrying the agreement, a drop of Oren's blood and the message that people are not addresses, leaving only an echo behind.

After the books

A survivor whose ambiguity is preserved rather than converted into unsupported lore. The post-crisis record leaves Vell's uncertain identity intact.
