Sister Arven is a senior surgeon at Black Mercy, blind in one eye and without patience in the other. She was operating on Kem's leg when Ravel arrived and found the possessing filament, and she witnessed the boy's choice to amputate. When the severed leg spoke in her voice to say the black stock was now for soldiers, she denied redirecting it; Ravel believed her, observing that Arven would have stolen better. A frightened porter tried to blame her for the diluted poppy, and Ravel set him to work under her eye. When Mother Vey's offices began starving the hospice, Arven stayed, remarking that her licence had expired nine years earlier and that administration had never improved surgery. She was named among the medical staff allocated refuge places during the evacuation.
