Leth Serane speaks like a blade wrapped in silk: smooth enough to make threats sound like counsel. Behind Sylph’s glass mask, he weighs stories, shortages, and the price of keeping fear from spilling. He will offer a tithe because Sylph always does. The question is what else he offers at the same time, and to whom.
Appearance
Leth sits behind the Sylph Council mask of smooth, pale glass, wearing grey robes inked at the edges with wind-sigils. During the book a hairline black crack appears in the mask and spreads until the glass splits from brow to chin. By the end he has lost his right hand.
In The Channeler
Leth Serane is the Sylph elder on Luminglade's Council of Masks, a voice like a blade wrapped in silk. He argued that Elias was too dangerous to keep and named Maerin Stormwake as his House's tithe. Behind his public composure he was already deeply compromised: he delivered the emptied trainee Uren Ashline to Brother Kael, watched Kael strip the boy, and arranged a cover story for his absence.
The book reveals why. Years earlier Leth signed the tithe transfer of his own daughter, Saren, a glass-repairer who laughed at the wrong parts of doctrine. She died in one of the first quieting trials, and Leth withdrew his complaint to preserve his office and her public honour. Kael held Saren's file and used it to bend him, and Leth told himself that keeping his seat prevented worse men from taking it. Once he struck Kael in fury, but still went on signing.
Leth sealed the tithe roads and the Hush diversion under his breath-seal, and Corren and Nyssa traced the poisoned Hush knots back to him. In the Lower Sanctum he tried to hold Kael to signed limits, caught a rod before it fell on Maerin, and quietly told Elias that some restraint was only fear with better posture. He tried to let Uren escape down a drainage stair, then recalled him when Kael threatened to release Saren's file.
When Kael trapped the twins and Maerin in the channeling frame, Leth was the Council witness at the controls. As Nyssa held the current, he forced the release with everything he had. Afterwards he confessed his part in the Hush, removed his broken mask and ground it underfoot, and pulled the breath from the chamber to drop the Sanctum brothers. When he moved to protect Uren, Kael severed the hand that had signed so much. Leth shouted for everyone to run and sang Uren's broken ward-song as the prisoners fled.
Half-carried by Fenn, he insisted on watching the end of the road he had signed, and in Kael's last laboratory said plainly that what they did was not justice. At the Festival court he tried to announce that he had signed the roads, and few heard. The book leaves him holding Kael's ledgers with the hand that remains, surviving as evidence rather than redeemed.
